Advanced Studies in Global Film History: Taiwan New Cinema and its Before and Afterlives - 12955 - FST 475 - 003
All students are expected to attend and participate in person at the assigned day/time. (F2F)

Prerequsite: FST 205

Cross-listed with FST 579-003.

As one of the most exciting "new wave" moments in the vast landscape of cinematic history, the Taiwan New Cinema merits far greater attention than it has received. This course studies selected works from the movement's key figures, such as Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Wang Toon, Ke Yizheng, Zhang Yi, and Sylvia Chang. A patient engagement with these films' formal and thematic ruminations on history, art, growth, and the process of modernization will yield rich understandings of the movement's genesis and evolution during the 1980s. We will analyze the stylistic departures and innovations showcased in these works, as well as the significant shifts in industrial practices they reflect. This course will also examine the movement's enduring legacies and the continual impact it has on contemporary Taiwanese and global cinema.
